Three generations of women had been given the name Ulysses by a slave for no better reason than how the word sounded when spoken. Esther Ulysses was beginning a journey that she had to walk alone. Marlene Griggs studied at Community College of Allegheny County, where she received a Word Processing Specialist Associate's in Science Degree, and also was a recipient of The African American Scholastic Award.
