The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, published in 1820. It's the story of Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher, came to Tarry Town in the Sleepy Hollow Valley to work. He was a gullible man, terrified of the ghost stories of the inhabitants. Often, late at night in the dark, he fancies he sees behind him a menacing silhouette of a headless horseman, with something in his hands. It could be the soldier of Hesse, beheaded by a cannonball in combat. Washington Irving, April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859, pen name Geoffrey Crayon and Diedrich Knickerbocker, was an American writer, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat. He is best known for his short stories Rip Van Winkle (1819) and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820), and biography/history A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus (1828), and The Life of George Washington (1855/59). Irving lived in England and was a famous American writer in Europe. He died aged 76.
