Getarix is a young Celtic lad who hates the gods. After escaping a brutal sacrifice ritual at the hands of his tribe, he flees for his life, landing in Roman territory. No longer welcome in the only home he has known, he faces two choices: sell himself as a rural slave or join the Roman army and make a new place for himself in the Roman Empire. But the empire is no place for a young outsider. His army training may help him survive the battles, but nothing can prepare him for the deadly political intrigue in Rome-a viper's nest that will threaten not just his life but the lives of those he loves.
