Hardships plague the Northumbrian Anglo-Saxon community and the monks at the Benedictine Abbey, who dread another deadly Viking attack. Unfortunately, the most immediate threat lurks unsuspected within their gates.

Half-Saxon, half-Dane, misfit Cynwulf lives apart from the world in a salvaged Viking ship, dreaming of spending his life with the fair Haeddi. But his rivals will do anything to prevent their union. When Cynwulf's battleaxe is found in the skull of a prominent man of the town, Cynwulf must clear his name---or lose everything to the vengeance of the community that has already rejected him.
