The author of Stonehenge and creator of the characters Sharpe and Thomas de Hookton, this time surprises us with a rigorous historical novel set in London at the beginning of the 19th century. Upon his return from the battle of Waterloo, the soldier Rider Sandman, agrees to gather evidence to prove the guilt of the painter Charles Corday in the death of a young aristocrat. Everything is ready to execute him, but in his investigation Sandman discovers the innocence of the painter and has very little time to try to prove it.
