John Calvin has been recognized as the exegete of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. In 1559 Calvin established the Academy of Geneva. He was motivated by his personal conviction that one of the greatest needs of the Reformation was an educational institution that could not only prepare preachers of the Gospel, but also men who could apply the principles of the Reformation to all the areas of life. Calvin occupied the chair of theology. Throughout his long pastoral and teaching career, Calvin produced one of the most complete and solid Bible commentaries ever written.
