Twenty and not married? Certainly a spinster would be thrilled to have a suitable marriage. But the question of marrying for love of a man or for love of an estate is what confronts Fortune Lindley, heir to Maguire's Ford, her family's estate in Ulster, Ireland. Headstrong like all the rest of the women in her family, there is nothing that will force her to marry William Devers, an Irish Protestant, just to inherit her beloved home. Fortune is naturally drawn to William's older brother, Kiernan Devers, disinherited due to his Catholic background. In a time of history when being a Catholic could be treason, Fortune knows only one man will claim her heart.
When William realizes that Fortune will never love or accept him, even though he is her only way to secure her inheritance, he flies into a murderous fury. The forbidden love between Fortune and Kiernan will spark unthinkable tragedy and force these lovers to a destiny that will take them from the emerald land of Ireland to the wilds of the New World.
