Most atlases are limited to sketching areas of political hegemony. Ethnic and/or national lines provide the basic context within which important concepts are optically presented. And, in the history of religions, much can be conveyed by graphics that are primarily geographical.

This introductory atlas represents the first 500 years of Christianity and can thus, for the most part, safely rely on ethnic and national boundaries to provde the basic context for the maps and drawings that illustrate change.

Three main areas are emphasized:

-Theology and dogma
-Ethical and moral life
-The early phase of the expansion of Christianity to a world religion
