Seeking peace in his later years, Buck Washington moves to the quiet marshes and dunes of Edisto Island, South Carolina. On his first morning there, he is awakened by the sound of his neighbor playing a violin just outside their beachfront cottages. Buck watches from his bedroom window as Walt Henderson repeats this odd ritual with each passing day. Despite both men yearning for solitude, Buck and Walt become unlikely friends. In time, Buck attempts to learn about the reasons behind Walt's ritual, and with it, his life. After several years spent together as neighbors and friends, their lives are shaken by a strange happening in the fall of 1992. A thousand miles away in Worchester, Massachusetts, Father Paul Moore is confronted by the sudden loss of faith suffered by his friend. A recent mission trip to Costa Rica and the chance meeting of an orphaned girl have brought a troubled past back to the surface for Father Peter Davis. He confesses his plans to leave the priesthood, unable to get past his resentment and bitterness toward God. But before Peter can leave, they are summoned by the Bishop to a small, Rhode Island town, where a mysterious statue of the Virgin Mary has begun to radiate heat. Skeptical but intrigued, Paul and Peter leave Massachusetts to conduct an investigation for the Church. The two priests follow a string of bizarre clues and tips from unlikely sources to make sense of the heated statue, embarking on a journey filled with implausible connections to Peter's past, and one that eventually leads them to the remote coasts of South Carolina.
