The son of a Puritan clergyman, Matthew Henry (1662â"1714) left law school to pursue the Christian ministry. Ordained to the Presbyterian Church, Henryâs spiritual gifts led to the rapid growth of his parish. His popularity resulted in his becoming pastor to a parish in a borough of London. Unfortunately, Henry became increasingly ill during the last two years of his life, and he died while on a preaching tour. Today Matthew Henry is best known for two major works. Exposition of the Old and New Testaments derived its popularity from being practical and devotional in nature, rather than a critical treatment of the scriptures. Generations of ministers and laymen alike have benefitted from Henryâs six-volume Complete Commentary, which features an exhaustive, verse-by verse study of the Bible.
Now the Matthew Henry Study Bible enables readers to profit from the simple piety and no-nonsense application of biblical teachings to daily life that are the enduring legacy of Matthew Henryâs life and writings.
